My writing and research focused on educational issues with occasional forays into sport-related issues for teaching. After we returned from Norway in when I had been attached to the Ministry of Education as a Roving Instructor of American Studies , I began doing more pro basketball research and became interested in the Original New York Celtics.

Wanting to read a book about them and finding none, I wrote my first basketball history on that team. His stories got me to realize that an NBL book was needed and it needed to be done before all the former players passed away. Their successors in the NBA have perpetuated the mythology because it continues to serve their purposes as they view them, probably from an economic, marketing and historic perspective. Al Cervi, who led the league in scoring, setting a new record one year subsequently shattered by Mikan and led his team to the NBL title; and.

Arnie Risen, who was a great player for both Indianapolis and Rochester. He was the top big man in the league until Mikan entered and was one of two Don Otten after Mikan departed. He scored and rebounded in double figures though rebounding was not an official stat throughout the life of the NBL. Wayne , Don Otten the last league scoring leader , Ed Dancker a mobile front line player who could shoot from the outside, too , Bob Carpenter who led the league in scoring once and was a rugged rebounder and Bob Davies who could shoot, dribble and coach.

Third team was Charlie Shipp the other player to play every NBL year , Jake Pelkington a great rebounder and scorer , Frankie Brian a fabulous shooter for Anderson , George Glamack the Blind Bomber could score in many ways , Bill "Red" Holzman who could shoot, drive, handle the ball and, coach, as we found out and Bob Calihan, who was a top scorer for some poor teams, but also a great team player.

Yes, I selected 6 on the third team.

See a Problem?

Clearly, this is a volume for people interested in the history of the sport, especially who want detailed scoring. This may put off some casual readers, but I thought that the NBL needed a real foundational history and I hope that I have provided that. It is not just for esoteric basketball "nuts", however.

I was always a big reader and in 9th grade wrote what I thought was the history of the NBA for an English class paper. It ran over 20 pages! Was the rough style of play considered unprofessional? Was the ever changing NBL rulebook an indicator of poor leadership by the league offices? Perhaps in yet another book we will find the answers. Related Papers.
